Fertility Friendly Recipe Inspiration!

As a Dietitian, I often get asked for recipes, meal ideas or healthy eating inspiration. So I thought I’d share here some of my favourite recipe books. I firmly believe that one of the most fertility-friendly changes you can make to your diet is really understanding what you are eating. The first step is to be cooking more at home! So while some of these books are ‘aimed’ at fertility, others are just normal recipe books that will help you on your way to understanding your food better. Some of the links in this blog are affiliate links, and many of them are to second-hand book suppliers - this helps keep costs low (so you can spend your pennies on the actual food, not the book).

  1. The Green Roasting Tin - this book by Rukmini Iyer was my go-to during lockdown. It has a great variety of vegetarian recipes with zero-fuss, and gives you a head-start in getting in your 5-a-day of fruit and veg! If you’re a meat eater or pescatarian, there are other books in the same series that contain meat, such as Quick Roasting Tin and (the original) The Roasting Tin

  2. NOSH - this is another brilliant series of recipe book, designed for those starting out or short on time. Using household measures, store cupboard ingredients and realistic shopping lists, this book shows that simplicity trumps fancy! I had NOSH For Students when I was at University, and thought that the budgeting part was useful, and there is a vegetarian version too.

  3. Wagamamas Your Way - this book contains recipes that are a little more complicated, but is great for versatility and suggesting substitutes for vegetarian and vegan options. I may be a little biased, because this type of Asian cuisine is one of my favourites!

  4. Deliciously Healthy Fertility - this book written by Ro Huntriss hits the nail on the head in terms of fertility nutrition, with every ingredient in every dish deserving its place in the book!

And last, but by no means least, I LOVE my ‘scrap’ recipe book. I write recipes down in this notebook that I love, no matter where I find them. Anything from my Granny’s infamous Walnut Loaf to a Sour Mushroom Soup recipe I saw on instagram. Go ahead, start your own, and send me a photo on instagram: @AKIN.FertilityDietitian
